string(1729) "Alissa Christine channels the essence of beauty through her creations and draws inspiration from the pure and simple joys of life. Florida International Magazine called her a "Power Player" as one of 100 individuals pushing Florida into the future.

For this Brazilian-American artist, expression through visual media connects with inner consciousness as an inspiration to be transmitted to the receiver. Her creations are multidisciplinary fusions of virtual reality, photography, lighting, movement, dimension, painting, sculpture, and display... sometimes performed live. She is a Miami-based professional photographer, author, and exhibiting visionary artist that is illuminated by nature, permaculture, and the healing arts.

In 2015 Alissa self-published a photography coffee-table book entitled “i love miami 365”, a 366 page, daily yearlong meditative journey of gratitude, celebrating the soul of Miami from the inside out. In it, her love for everyday beauty is on display as an offering to the world.  These are images from that book.

Her art and photography have been featured on albums for recording artists, book covers, and editorial publications, such as Ocean Drive’s Art Basel Magazine, Florida Inside Out, Elle, Haute Living, 944, Miami Modern Luxury, Ego Trip, Latina Magazine, Sabores and more.

Alissa’s intention is to share the light so all can see the light and be the light. And she contributes to the pulse of the community through creating, curating, and promoting art, wellness, permaculture, and music events.

Alissa Christine is open to art and photography commissions, collaborations, travel projects, wellness/permaculture workshops, and holistic retreats.

The nature of Slippery Geometry is an exercise in futility, by design. One could say, half-joking, that makes an excellent metaphor for life.

Centrally, it’s a collection of single-material works of layered geometric repetitions–aiming to be an even field, with no single focal point. Instead, each piece is infinitely divisible into sub-compositions as the eye moves around the work. The wet materials defy precision, but add nuance, complicating the delineations.

In practice, it borrows freely from multiple 20th century movements that rarely crossed paths: the rigorous shape play of Op Art, the gestural freedom of Abstract Expressionism and the textured tones of Color-Field paintings.

Slippery Geometry is a well established but flexible concept that has grown into separate sub-categories, broken out by material. Each series finds its own voice within the whole, while staying true to the core idea. Now that the vocabulary is defined, and expanded, there’s new room to experiment: seeing if the work retains its essential nature if one part or principle is disregarded or altered—keeping it an ongoing body of work.

Native to eastern NC, Caroline grew up camping in the mountains of NC often with her family and has always considered this area home. You can feel her love for the forest, mountains, and water within her designs. Caroline took her first pottery class seeking a way to rediscover her creative expression and found healing while working with clay as it supported her through recovery. Caroline creates to nurture those who use her pottery in their daily rituals, uplifting their spirits and homes as it invites them to find gratitude and joy in the present moment. Her work explores movement through various textures on the surface with slips, carving, and some sculptural elements. Caroline finds working with clay a grounding process that reminds her of the importance of being centered, present, and curiously open to possibility."

string(1203) "Celia was born in Havana, Cuba, and arrived to the United States alone as a young teenager in 1962. Under the care of the Peter Pan program, she relocated to Portland, Oregon, and lived there for many years. The Pacific Northwest and its multiple cultures were very influential in Celia’s life and this exposure allowed her to gain the vision of the human condition and our world that permeates her work in textures and colors.

She moved to Miami, Florida in the 1970s, again adding another layer to her perceptions as she reconnected with her roots. After retiring from a business career, she felt the need to unleash her creativity, which had been lying dormant for too long. Since then she has been fanning that flame with resolution. Without any formal art education, she found allies in Baruj Salinas and Yovani Bauta, two acclaimed Cuban artists, who have encouraged and nurtured her talent to blossom for the last fifteen years.

Acrylic paint and found objects are her mediums of choice, using unusual materials like broken glass to add richness to her textures. Her vision can be abstract or not, the freedom of the abstract feeds new techniques and richness to her other works.

She is known for her adaptability within several artistic mediums including sculptural encaustic painting, abstract drawing, and small format assemblages. The abstract approach to all of her work is consistently informed by the embrace of color and mark-making movement, juxtaposed with form-driven minimalism.

Born in Washington D.C and spending the balance of her young adult life in Massachusetts, Dale received a BA in English with a minor in Studio Art from Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. She then spent over 15 years managing multiple fine art galleries in southern Massachusetts. She immersed herself in the representation of a number of accomplished artists across various genres, including contemporary painting from China and stone sculpture from East Africa, where she also traveled to assist in selecting new works for exhibition."

string(1721) ""Plants are foundational to my art. Living beings like us, are made by the great Unknowable Essence. I approach my work with gratitude and respect for these beautiful plants and the ecological web in which they grow. As part of my practice, I go on walks, observe nature, harvest plants sustainably, and work within the boundaries of the seasons. I forage or grow almost all the dyes I use in my work and try to keep my practice as environmentally sustainable as possible. Through dye plants, I can see the passing of the seasons and feel deeply grounded in a sense of place. Each piece I create communicates the season and land in which the dye was grown and represents a unique moment in time stored in the DNA of the plants. My art is a response to the toxic, flat, lifeless quality of synthetically dyed, mass-produced cloth and an effort to reconnect with the plants that grow right outside my front door. When I create a piece, I usually start with a plan drawn from a journal I keep for ideas. These plans are based on countless hours of experimentation which inform me how various dyes and plants will play together on the cloth. When I like something, I try it on a larger piece of silk. Working in layers, I often use Japanese shibori cloth folding techniques or other dye-resist methods and often dye with plant parts in direct contact with the cloth. I never quite know what the outcome will be at the end. Opening up a dyed bundle is a surprise, a collaboration between myself and the plants. Working in this way is a slow, but gratifying labor of love. The colors are a consequence of a relationship built on respect, compassion, observation, experimentation and knowledge gained from other natural dyers." "

string(1753) "Jacoline Mulhall was born in Kettering, Ohio and presently lives with her husband Kevin in Mars Hill, North Carolina. Raised by parents who loved art, camping, and hiking, they instilled within her a deep appreciation of nature and creating art. When Jacoline was 10 years old, she found a book on natural dye that captured her imagination. The center of the book contained a beautiful picture of various plants and the colors one could make from them. She still owns the book. When she became an adult she met a Japanese Natural dyer, Mami Adachi, and helped host a natural dye workshop that was sponsored by Antioch college. This inspired her to pursue natural dye and surface design. Jacoline’s work is in part influenced by Mami Adachi’s mentor Shimura Fukumi. Designated as a Japanese national treasure, Fukumi has practiced weaving since 1924 and natural dyeing since 1955. In her book The Music of Color, Fukumi expounds on her spiritual connection to nature, dye plants and color. She quotes from a dye book by Maeda Ujo, Ancient Colors, and Dyes of Japan. “Fires for simmering were lit with reverence; water, earth, and metal were chosen with care; and so the best dyes combined all five of the traditional Asian elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Life in every color came from the root of heaven and earth. “ Jacoline’s own spiritual practice, the Baha’i Faith, expounds on a spiritual force contained within all created things. Baha’u’llah, the prophet founder, states, “Know thou that every created thing is a sign of the revelation of God. Each according to its capacity, is, and will ever remain, a token of the Almighty.” It is her honor to collaborate with these tokens and capture some of their beauty."

string(2026) "I see myself as part of the American tradition of landscape painting.  My family heritage is grounded in the southeast; one of my great-grandfathers was a cabinet maker who moved in 1842 from Germany to settle in central Georgia. My grandfather, John S. Kah,  took up photography very early, listing it as his occupation in 1890 when he was a young man in Macon, Georgia. He established his own commercial photography studios in old Cedar Key, Florida, later in Bradenton, Tampa, Jacksonville, Durham, NC and in Vermont, moving seasonally. His work can be found in historic archives in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

My father and mother both worked in his shop (she hand-coloring images). They later had a photo-engraving business, so image making was part of family life. I was interested in natural history, and once considered becoming herpetologist, keeping snakes and turtles and rescuing wild-life.  I became interested in drawing animals, fascinated by the challenge of rendering them accurately, later grounded in a context of careful use of tools and materials and exposure to visual culture, something that still engages me.

During art school, because the focus there was more on abstraction and modernist styles, I went my own way, researching and seeking out mentors who could give me training in use of traditional oils, though I do sometimes use acrylic and on occasion, alkyds for some applications. My skills are largely self-taught; though I did do a lot of drawing in art school. I often paint on panel or linen, using traditional grounds, mediums and materials.

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate degree from Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida and have had a freelance/private studio since 1984. My work is in private and corporate collections in the southeast, and internationally. I teach from my studio and in nationally known schools including the Fine Arts League of the Carolinas, Penland School, John C. Campbell Folk School, and Arrowmont School."

My previous work was in printed fabrics. Fabric was solely a surface to be painted until I fell in love with weaving, felting and now dyeing. The magic of weaving is that it allows me to color fabrics from the inside. I can build exquisite and complex palettes, painting with the yarns and letting them play with each other in unexpected ways.

Using techniques such as mixing yarns with varying shrinkage to create three-dimensional cloth adds magic and surprise to both my felting and weaving work.

Prior to moving to Asheville, NC, AboutColor was strictly a woven trim business represented in Atlanta at the design center in the Travis showroom. "

He then furthered his skills at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art as a Master Frame Conservator. Mark continued painting while working at Hagenbeck/Wallace as a set designer for the Ringling Brothers Circus and Disney On Ice.

After moving to North Carolina, he immersed himself in painting the surrounding area’s unique and majestic views. Many of these locations are quickly disappearing or being irreparably damaged due to the tremendous influx of people moving to the mountains. The scope of his work ranges from broad landscapes to intricately detailed interior scenes. His preferred media are oils, pastels and charcoals. Each piece conveys a moment in time - one fleeting moment in nature - that can never be duplicated. Mark also designs and builds his own frames to complement his art, using reclaimed local wood whenever possible."

In his job, he was lucky enough to travel all over the world. While traveling, he began photographing all the beautiful and interesting places he went. This passion quickly turned into a new outlet for his imagery.

He produces high-quality photographs for both residential and commercial use. His subjects include Botanicals, Landscapes, Architecture, just to name a few. Through his work, he is trying to show the beauty in the world around us, from a fresh new perspective. He believes, “ A classically beautiful picture, never goes out of style”, and his work exemplifies that.

He has been working and living in and around New York City since 2001."

The aesthetic of my work is in between a state of strict representational subject matter and a deconstruction of those rules.  I am instilling a vision through my work that comments on a global scale, and certain philosophical topics that pertain to being timeless while preserving the craft of the ‘Old Master’ painting techniques.

I find essential to show the dichotomy between both modes of thinking and creating. The work hovers in a hauntingly real realm while projecting into a Symbolists view that allows for dynamic interplay between subjects and ideas. With every piece I aim to show truth in humanity while preserving the dignity of our time.

The process of creation for Nina has always been a powerful place of meditation and surrendering to the moment. Creating from an intuitive place, each piece allows space for her to let go of control, listen and be a channel for consciousness and evolutionary growth."

The elusive and often fragile sculptures derive from an intrigue with the human condition and healing. Many of her influences stem from psychology, biology, and spirituality.

Born and raised in a Palestinian American home in Wisconsin, Nina's sculptural work explores her multi-cultural lens that parallels her curiosity for patterns, perspectives and consciousness. She started her artistic journey in 2005 at San Diego Community College and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 3D Design in 2011. Finding her passion for porcelain at Clemson University, she received a Masters of Fine Arts in Ceramics in 2014. Currently residing in the Appalachian Mountains, she has established a studio practice in the historical Marshall High Studios in Marshall, NC."

On the sides of her notebooks, you could follow page after page of doodles.  They eventually became more sophisticated.  As her interest in ceramics expanded, her goal was to transfer her doodling to ceramics.  Looking at the lively, offbeat, black and white sgraffito vessels that should bring feelings of amusement, playfulness, whimsy and enthusiasm.

All her life she has had the urge to be creative. At one point in her teaching career while living in Indonesia, she worked part-time and took life drawing classes with Teguh Ostenrik (teguhostenrik.com), an Indonesian artist.  Creating and being creative fed her soul in a way that was long overdue.  It was a craving and a need.  Being a teacher and a librarian allowed for her creativity but she knew it was time for something more. At one point Teguh suggested that she work in clay.  Rhona was instantly hooked to a material that was so forgiving and ever changing.  For her it was a material that she could explore and be inquisitive with.  She went to work with an Indonesian sculptor Dolorosa Sinaga (Instagram: @dolorosasinaga) who inspired her progress in clay.  More recently, in South Africa under the guidance of veteran potters at The Pottery Studio (www.potterystudio.co.za), she moved to ceramics and started exploring vessels.  The journey continues.

Rhona Polonsky lives in Asheville, NC and is a member of the Kennilworth Artists."

Since 1990 Robert Winkler has been manipulating volume, mass, and balance to create a sense of movement. Above all, it is his ability to find infinite variation within a limited number of shapes that sets his work apart. Without so much as a single curved cut of wood or metal, he achieves serpentine animated forms through the use of incremental gradations. It is a discipline that offers no hiding-place for error, demanding meticulous workmanship.

Robert has been pursuing art for most of his life, “I got a late start,” he jokes, pointing to a surprisingly convincing sculpture of a bear he made in kindergarten at the age of five. By the time he was seven he was attending children’s art classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art. He went on to study ceramics, painting, and sculpture at schools in Cleveland, Boston, and New York, and through his travels around the world, with working vacations in France, Italy, Hungary, and Spain.

An Asheville, North Carolina resident since 2003, Robert was the founder of River Sculpture, an annual contemporary outdoor sculpture showcase for regional sculptors – a show that many visitors described as a “sculpture in itself.” -RW"

We watch colors, shapes, and textures transform as time alters them. It is often difficult to carve out a moment of quiet to not only visually appreciate the beauty around us but to physically feel it as well. To have the sensation of the softness of a flower petal, to feel the veins on the underside of a leaf on fingers, or bury toes in the sand as water laps at the ankle, all reveal a deeper perception than the merely visual. To hold a rock, to run a hand over the bark of a tree, or to feel the edges of a seashell are occasions missed all too often."

As a military brat with two creative parents, art has always been a part of who I am. Growing up in England I was not only exposed to another culture, but I was able to see firsthand much of the history of art only seen in books by others. I was also afforded the opportunity to take private drawing and ceramics lessons during my time there. I spent many hours outside exploring nature and developed a love for creation from a very early age. This has been a catalyst for my work, and I incorporate it in each piece.
As an adult, art has often been put on the back burner to other life obligations. After months of prayer and reflection, I made the decision to follow my dream of being a full-time artist and went back to school and earned my BFA in Ceramics from Mars Hill University. Now my days are spent incorporating the beauty and textures of creation into works of art in hopes that they bring a sense of peace and joy to others."

string(1512) "Skip Rohde was an officer in the U.S. Navy for 22 years but he has always been an artist.  After retiring from the Navy, he and his wife came to the mountains near Asheville, North Carolina.  Rohde went back to school and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a concentration in painting, from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.  Following graduation in 2003, he became a full-time artist with a studio in the River Arts District.

In 2008, Rohde answered the call and went to Iraq for 18 months with the State Department to manage reconstruction programs around the country.  That was followed by a year in Afghanistan, helping local officials, businessmen, and others to better manage their government and economy. Rohde returned home in 2012 and his wife won't let him go to war zones anymore.

Rohde's studio is in a former textile mill next to the historic French Broad River just north of Asheville.  He is always working on something new - currently a series of figures in charcoal and pastels, but also with new techniques in oils.  His paintings have won recognition and awards in national and regional exhibitions.  The Smithsonian Museum of American History has his "Faces of Afghanistan" drawings (over 80 drawings, mostly portrait sketches of rural Afghans done from life) in their permanent collection.  In addition to making his artwork, Rohde teaches workshops and mentors young students.

Skip Rohde is available for private portrait commissions."

string(983) ""I always search the world for pattern, color, and composition. Different perspectives – the view from an airplane or through a microscope –reveal abstract patterns that are the basis for my visual vocabulary. Technology (airplanes, microscopes, computer-aided design) enables these different views, allowing me to apprehend hidden details, and to shift back and forth between different aspects, the micro, and the macro.

The materials that I use to create bring my work back to a human personal scale. Through many marks and layers; I build my landscapes by hand using processes that are slow and intimate. I engage with the forms I’ve discovered in the world around me, dissolving and reconstituting them with paper, fabric, thread, paints, pencils, and acrylic mediums. I experience these re-imagined landscapes as close-up details and distant topographies simultaneously. I hope that my work invites you to take the time to enjoy these shifting spaces and perspectives.""

string(1363) "Growing up in Hong Kong, Valerie knew from an early age art would be her lifelong passion. She was a textile designer during the Swinging Sixties in London, where the zany fashions of designers Mary Quant, Ozzie Clark and Zandra Rhodes were her influences.

In the eighties, for more than a decade, Valerie presented her ceramics and whole life vision at Pandemonium, a uniquely creative emporium in Key West Florida. Everywhere around the island, you will experience her artistic fingerprint in the hand painted, tropical house number tiles decorating many homes and businesses.

A move to Asheville, North Carolina in 2004, fueled a new passion, fashion!  An annual fashion show at the Gardens Hotel in Key West shows her one-of-a-kind HohCouture collections to a regular and global clientele.

With a group of artists in Asheville’s historic Kenilworth neighborhood, she helped start the annual Kenilworth Art Tour, where she showed her ever evolving artwork. In the summer of 2023, Valerie relocated to the UK.

In the five decades of experiencing her art in different but related genres - textile design, ceramic, fashion and now mixed media assemblages and collages, Valerie has discovered commonalities in each successive genre - she is drawn to the imperfect and the random - Wabi Sabi - the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection.
