Paintings by Charity Ray

Sale & Fundraiser

March 25th, 1 - 5 pm

Join us from 1 - 5 pm at the gallery for this special event, featuring a sale of the few remaining original paintings by the late local artist Charity Ray.  Prints and note cards of some of Charity's most popular works will also be available.

Charity was a cherished Mars Hill community member and artist who worked to help rehabilitate the Rosenwald School Building, where her own art journey began.

As an alumna, she served as a member of the Mars Hill Anderson Rosenwald School Friends Group, and made contributions as a member of the History Committee for 'Our Story, This Place', a notated history of the school published in 2022.

Per Charity’s wishes, the proceeds from sales of her originals and prints are to be divided equally between Mt. Olive Baptist Church and the Mars Hill Anderson Rosenwald School, who in turn will donate funds to a Scholarship in Charity's name, established at Mars Hill University.

Books and printed notecards relevant to the school's history will be available for purchase at the gallery!

The Mars Hill Anderson Rosenwald School (MHARS) operated from 1905 to 1965 as a Madison County School for African American children in grades 1 through 8. The school was rebuilt in 1928 using monies from Chicago philanthropist Julius Rosenwald. It served students from Mars Hill, Marshall, and Hot Springs, and is one of only a handful of the over 5,300 schools and teacherages Rosenwald funded across the rural South that is still standing.

Meet and chat with the local historians behind  'Our Story This Place', which tells the fascinating history of MHARS in the Long Ridge Community of Mars Hill, North Carolina.

Published in August 2022, this new, notated history includes stories, photos, and memories from alumni, friends, and descendants of the Long Ridge Community, and provides comprehensive information about Black education in the rural South from after the Civil War through the time of desegregation.

The book signing will also include a preview of our upcoming March 25th show of works by the late Charity Ray, a cherished Mars Hill community member and artist who worked to help rehabilitate the Rosenwald School Building, where her own art journey began.

As an alumna, she served as a member of the MHARS Friends Group and a member of the History Committee of contributers to 'Our Story, This Place'.

CELIA REIGLE

Out of my Mind

Gushing and trickling out of Celia Reigle's mind, this body of work is a story never told before about the search for freedom, of welcoming accidents and giving up control of one's thoughts. "Ideas don't inspire me," she says. Textures, colors, images and what people live and see are her main source of inspiration.

Like a dance with mystery, beauty and strength, Out of My Mind invites you to see with different eyes. It is created the same way one can discover it: Suddenly! Something happens when you decide to let go and search behind for what is alive.

Celia Reigle migrated to Oregon from Havana, Cuba alone as a teenager, proclaiming it the "biggest adventure of my life.” Now, her imagery takes you there, into a space where anything is possible, without boundaries or rules, where you no longer need to be in your mind...
